I finished the JP Morgan Investment Banking job simulation through Forage. At first, I thought it would be about learning technical finance concepts. It was not just that, however. The JP Morgan Investment Banking job simulation had a lot more Mergers and Acquisitions than I expected. What I did not expect was how much the Investment Banking job simulation would change the way I think about decision-making in finance.
One of the things I learned from the simulation was how structured investment banking thinking actually is. People often talk about investment banking in the finance world. It was surprising how technical every small detail was in the job simulation. Every decision is based on some mix of assumptions, data, and reasoning. There is rarely an answer in the investment banking world. Instead, it is about making the informed decision possible with the information you have. This can be a lot of information or minimal information.
The valuation part of the simulation really stood out to me. I learned about ways companies are valued. This included comparing companies and thinking about future cash flows. Valuation is not one formula. It is like different perspectives on what a company could be worth. These perspectives depend on assumptions concerning growth and risk and market conditions.
I also learned how important attention to detail is in finance from the job simulation. Small changes in assumptions can lead to different outcomes. This made me realize how careful you have to be when analyzing businesses or building models.
The job simulation also made it clear how much of finance is about communication. I always knew it was about communication. The amount of communication presented to me was less than I anticipated. Being able to explain reasoning and logical matters just as much as doing the analysis itself. It is about being able to tell a story with numbers that actually makes sense to someone.
Overall, the experience gave me an understanding of what investment banking work actually looks like beyond textbooks or online explanations. The JP Morgan Investment Banking job simulation gave me a hands-on approach. It reinforced my interest in finance. Helped me better understand how structured and analytical the decision-making process really is in investment banking.
